Final Thoughts and Happy Summer!

To all the parents of room 21, thank you for your support this year. I've enjoyed working together. To my students, thanks for a great year of learning. Have a wonderful summer and work hard in grades 6 and 7! My door is always open if you need help next year.

Here are a few of my favourite quotes from the year that I wanted to share again.

“Catch! calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back.”
 Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.”
― R.J. PalacioWonder

“I wasn't even sure why I was getting this medal, really.
No, that's not true. I knew why.
It's like people you see sometimes, and you can't imagine what it would be like to be that person, whether it's somebody in a wheelchair or somebody who can't talk. Only, I know that I'm that person to other people, maybe to every single person in that whole auditorium.
To me, though, I'm just me. An ordinary kid.
But hey, if they want to give me a medal for being me, that's okay. I'll take it. I didn't destroy a Death Star or anything like that, but I did just get through the fifth grade. And that's not easy, even if you're not me.”
― R.J. PalacioWonder

“If you can get through middle school without hurting anyone’s feelings, that’s really cool beans.
-Summer Dawson”

" Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? ... And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. "
Akeelah and the Bee, Marianne Williamson

Go forward and let your light shine. :-)

June 20- 27

This week the students played probability games and practised and presented readers' theatre skits. They have also worked hard researching the 1914-1929 time period for our Williamson Road Centennial celebration. Their work will be on display at our Centennial celebration next fall.  In health class Mr. Semes delivered the growth and development curriculum. This may lead to questions at home, or help open the lines of discussion.

We looked at this list of 37 life changing books, and the students were excited to realize how many they had read. Hopefully this list will inspire some summer reading.

This is another great to-do list, just for fun. It's entitled, "24 things every child should do before the age of 12." :-)

Important dates:
  • Wednesday, June 25th: family swim at pool
  • Thursday, June 26th: reports go home; physical activity play day in the PM
  • Friday, June 27th: last day of school

There will be no more homework between now and the end of the school year.

June 13-19

This week the students continued to present their social studies projects, which were all very well done! See pictures of the students with their projects below. We also had a guest artist and parent, Ersa, come in to do printmaking with the class for our Junefest canvas. We have continued to study probability in math. You can help extend your child's understanding of probability by talkiing about real life applications, such as weather forecasts. In drama the students presented skits which demonstrated their social studies knowledge through drama.

We also began an exciting final class project of looking through the Williamson Road archives from 1914-1930. Our class will prepare some materials that will be displayed at the Centennial celebration next OctoberImportant dates this week:
  • Saturday, June 14th: Junefest
  • Tuesday, June 17th: recognition assembly and Glen Ames tour in the PM (1-3) for grade 6's
  • Wednesday, June 18th: pool
  • Friday, June 20th: grade 6 graduation 2 PM

There will be no more homework between now and the end of the school year.

June 6- June 12

This week the grade 6's finished writing EQAO. Congratulations on your hard work and persistence! In math the students have continued to solve problems involving probability and also wrote a probability quiz, (without any power in the school no less.) They also learned about our upcoming election and participated in the Students Vote program by casting a secret ballot for the local candidate of their choice. The first group of students presented their social studies projects on Thursday and they were all very well done! Everyone else will present next Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

We had a speaker come in to talk about anti-bullying, which tied in with our speaker a few weeks ago, who spoke on the topic of gender equity. I showed the class this powerful video about celebrating diversity and differences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAHCqnux2fk&feature=youtu.be Some students requested that I post it so that they could watch it again with their parent(s).
